A first-timer's pre-trip checklist
Everything to check the night before you fly, in one list. If every line is done, there's nothing else to do until you land, and landing is two settings.
The night before
- Your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM. See Is my phone compatible with eSIM? The one-minute check.
- Your plan fits the trip: fixed for maps and messages, unlimited for streaming and hotspot.
- The plan is on your phone: it shows in My plans and an MTN Travel eSIM line is in your SIM list. See Check your plan is on your phone and ready before you fly.
- Data roaming is off for the MTN Travel eSIM line. You turn it on when you land, not before.
- Data roaming is off for your home SIM. See Turn off data roaming on your home SIM before you fly.
- If your destination needs an APN, it's set. The list is in your add guide, under Setting your APN.
- You know the landing steps for your phone: Turn on data roaming for your plan on iPhone, Turn on data roaming for your plan on Samsung, and Turn on data roaming for your plan on Android.
Good to know
- Your plan starts when you connect in a supported country, not when you buy. Your validity days count from that first connection. Unused data expires at the end of your validity period. It doesn't roll over.
- It's fine to add your plan days before you fly, as long as you have a stable connection to do it. Leave data roaming off until you land. Nothing on your plan starts until you connect abroad, so there's no downside to adding early and switching on later.
- Your plan is data only, with no phone number, calls, or SMS. Calls and texts keep using your home number.
- The one thing to remember on arrival: give the phone a minute, and if nothing happens, Airplane Mode on for 30 seconds, then off.
