Adding your plan with a VPN already active

A running VPN can block the secure connection your phone makes to download an eSIM. It doesn't always cause a problem, but it's one of the quickest things to rule out: disconnect the VPN, add the plan, then reconnect it.

Steps

  1. Disconnect the VPN.
  2. Add your plan from your phone's settings with the QR code from your order page or email.
  3. Once the plan is on your phone, reconnect the VPN.

Good to know

  • The same applies after you land. If data feels slow or won't connect with a VPN on, turn it off briefly to see whether the MTN Travel eSIM connection itself is working, then turn it back on.
  • On a company phone, the VPN may be enforced by IT; see Adding your plan on a work phone managed by your company's IT.
  • In mainland China, a VPN is what many travelers use to reach blocked services. Add the plan before you arrive and keep the VPN for afterward; see Coverage in China.
  • If it gets interrupted, your plan is safe and nothing is charged. Try again from your phone's settings with the same QR code or details.

Still not working?

If the add fails with the VPN off, see "Cellular plan cannot be added" and other add errors. Still not working? Contact MTN Travel eSIM support and include four things: your ICCID, your order number, your phone model and OS version, and what you've already tried.

Send a message. We'll get you sorted.
